Rachel and Carmen discuss Banned Books Week (September 27th – October 3,2020). How do you feel about challenging and banning material? What have been some of your favorite challenged books?
Here are the links:
Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Haha! A good book that was banned during my middle school age days was ‘Catcher in Rye’, but ironically required as reading during my college years. Many books such as this condone unacceptable behaviors like disrespect toward adults, abusive language and references to prostitution. Being a parent myself to two boys and understanding the nature of this book I wouldn’t appreciate my kids reading this material, even it is acceptable with today’s generation. Lot of books that were banned in the past are back on the shelves because writing is seen more as form of art no matter what topics they contain.
