Summary:
Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.
My take: 4 looks
This one was hard to put down! Recommended by a reading friend, I was able to nab it from the library e-book collection as soon as it hit the virtual shelf.
Our protagonist, Patricia, has it all. A lovely home in an affluent community, a physician husband, and two typical children, one boy and one girl, of course. When her circle of friends decide to embark on a book club, they choose that it will be centered around the true crime genre.
Enter our antagonist, James. Charming, handsome, mysterious, and excellent with money, he befriends the ladies’ husbands. With that “in”, he starts to exhibit behavior that Patricia finds not quite right. When her live-in mother-in-law recognizes James from a photograph taken 60 years prior, Patricia knows that she needs to investigate.
And so begins a cat-and-mouse game between Patricia and James, soon joined by the rest of the book club. Have all of these true crime books played on their imaginations? Why does James always seem to be one step ahead? Is their cozy way of life worth jeopardizing to find out the truth?
This one will have you glued to the page, and sitting on the edge of your seat.
